'Cooki' Evaluation

This brief was to create an identity for a friend, Chris Cooke, who's know as DJ COOKI. He only asked for an identity design, one that can be applied onto flyers, posters, web presence and Cd demo's etc. The usual stuff related to Dj's I guess.
But to bulk up this work as a brief, I decided to create a CD as well.

I enjoyed the actual designing of it, but when it came down to

I've finally, at last, completed the COOKI brief!

It's taken a while, but I've finally got there!

The designing of the actual identity was fairly straight-forward. I enjoyed putting together a few ideas, sending them off to Chris to see what he thought, what he liked/disliked about certain points and then amending them until I'd created the one he wanted to use.

The the Cd, I enjoyed putting that together, as looking as Cd design is something I've never really done before and it's not necessarily my 'thing'. Putting it together and creating a product was a bit harder than expected. I had in my head how I wanted it to look. But it never quite worked that way until last week, when I discovered how to print onto the actual CD!
Simple, I know, but I struggled to get my head round it.

But now I've created something I'm really happy with and think it's suitable for submission!
I'd love the opportunity to do something like this is near future. And Chris has seen the Cd design I had a go at doing, even though he didn't ask me to create it, and is going to let me know when he needs his next demo Cd doing...and there will be money involved next time. So that's good news!

Final COOKI CD

Today I've finally completed the CD for the COOKI brief!
It's taken a while for me to get my head around doing it, as every time I got close to completing or, or thought I was close to completing it something didn't work quite as I intended it to work.
Especially the COOKI identity on the front of the case, which has ended up being a clear sticker.

I'm happy with the final resolution, especially since discovering a method of printing onto a CD! Up until this morning I was intending to keep the CD within the case white, but as the sticker on the front isn't as clear and bold as I would like, I thought the CD needed to become a bit more of a feature!





I can finally put this brief away now, I just need to organize and file it in some sort of an order, and figure out a way of presenting it for submission.

Overall, I've really enjoyed this brief. It's been fun and there were no boundaries, it was really open. And it's even more of a success because Chris (the guy who asked for the identity designing) has chosen this one, is using it on existing promotional material and web presence and he is now putting together a demo CD which he is requiring a CD design for....

COOKI CD Design

Chris has chosen his required logo, the type with the headphones, but also available in a variety of colours. As that is all he wanted, I thought I would adapt this brief in my own way and create a CD cover design for an imaginery cd!

I've only just made a start on these today, coming up with about 10 different ideas, but these few probably being my favourite's. The next step I will take will be to try out different layouts and typefaces with these ones and see where that brings me.

COOKI Feedback

Today I got a message back from Chris with some feedback about the Cooki logo's I sent to him earlier in the week. (shown below)



Which is good news! I was unsure what his response would be as I wasn't 100% sure what it is he's looking for. The two images below are the two he mentions in the message, that he likes the one with the headphones but prefers the other typeface, and suggested combining the two....




...which is what I've done here. I prefer this one much more to the others I did too, so I'm glad I sent him the PDF at that point in my progression with this work. In the reply I sent to him, I mentioned I might have a go at putting together some other ideas. But instead I think I'll just send him this one, as he wanted and see if this is the one he wants to go with...



If he does choose this one, putting a closure to the project, as I don't think he wants to to do anything else, ie a flyer or cd cover, I think for the sake of my portfolio and too boost this brief a bit more, I might take it a bit further and do a cd cover.
But we'll see.

COOKI Ideas

So this is what I've done so far...and I'm not sure how it's going. I'm going to have to email him these ideas and see what he thinks, and if I'm on the right track!

I'm happy with a couple of these, like the one with the simple typeface, but the headphones and it's wire wrapping around the text. Then there's the one's with the decks as the OO's. But I've got a feeling they might have too much detail.
But we'll see...

The next step is to put together a PDF to send to him. Keeping my eyes peeled in the mean time for any more inspiration with this one.

COOKI logo

Yesterday at work a guy who I work with, who travels the country Djing in various clubs has asked me if I could have a go at designing his identity. He calls himself COOKI, as his name is Chris Cooke. He produces hard trance/dance.
Something out of my comfort zone, and not too sure where so go for research. But after doing a bit of research, I think I've found some relevant stuff. He's told me of a website to look at that might help give me and idea of the type of thing he's looking for.
So here's some stuff I've found that might help inspire me with his design.
